Different Types of Idler Rollers

Conveyor rollers, also known as idler rollers, are cylindrical-shaped bars that run along and beneath a conveyor belt. Idler rollers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own set of purposes.

Idler rollers are typically used to support the weight and impact of goods being moved along the belt. They also aid in the material's smooth and continuous flow along the belt.

Idler rollers can be self-aligning and help to keep the belt on course. The rollers are normally positioned within a metal frame and are known as idler sets, depending on the construction and shape of the conveyor belt.

Almost any conveyor application can benefit from idler rollers. Bearing brand, bearing size, diameter or series, wall thickness, seal type, and material type are some of the variables. Different variables can be chosen and customized to meet the norms and specifications of your application.

Idler rollers are utilized for a variety of procedures, with material type, specific gravity, and lump size being some of the influencing criteria.

Here are several types which are going to be introduced in this article:

1. Plain Idler Rollers

2. Tapered Idler Rollers

3. Rubber-Coated Idler Rollers

4. Rubber Disc Idler Rollers

5. Rubber Screw Idler Rollers

6. Steel Screw Idler Rollers

1. Plain Idler Rollers

The most frequent type of idler roller is the plain roller. The conveyor belt is supported and shaped by them.

In the trough, tracking, and transition frames, plain rollers can be installed on the load side of the belt. They can also be attached to the return side of the belt.

2. Tapered Idler Rollers

On either the load or return side of the belt, a tapered idler roller can be fitted. When mounted in a tracking frame, they help with conveyor belt tracking.

3. Rubber-Coated Idler Rollers

On either the load or return side of the belt, a tapered idler roller can be fitted. When mounted in a tracking frame, they help with conveyor belt tracking.

4. Rubber Disc Idler Rollers

Durable rubber discs are positioned at regular intervals throughout the length of a rubber disk idler roller. Rubber discs are grouped on both ends of the roller to offer greater support for the conveyor belt edge.

The rubber disks are spread out to separate any carryback (leftover materials adhered to the belt after a scraper has performed its cleaning function). This reduces material buildup on the roller's exterior, which is a typical cause of belt mistracking.

5. Rubber Screw Idler Rollers

Rubber screw idler rollers have an anti-tear rubber coating that runs the length of the roller in a continuous screw pattern. The screw design aids in the removal of material build-up on the belt as well as the maintenance of belt tracking.

6. Steel Screw Idler Rollers

Steel screw idler rollers, like rubber screw idler rollers, feature a continuous screw-patterned covering that runs the length of the roller. However, instead of rubber, steel is used as a component.

The screw design aids in the removal of material build-up on the belt as well as the maintenance of belt tracking. Steel screws scrubbing action is greater than rubber screws, hence steel screw idler rollers are more effective where carryback is high.

An application where scrapers cannot be utilized to clean the belt, such as a mobile plant conveyor, is an example of where a steel screw idler may be useful. Due to a lack of space, a scraper cannot be installed on a mobile plant conveyor. Another example is a folding conveyor, which may prevent such devices from being installed.
